Some couples write their namesOthers opt for a love phrase or initials, and even announcing the wedding hashtag can be another good idea. If this appeals to you, find out how to make your own decorative maxi letters below.

Materials

For the structure of the letter

  • 1 or 2 large sheets of cardboard per letter
  • Large cardboard boxes (quantity depends on the number of letters)
  • 1 penknife
  • Thick masking tape

For painting

  • Sheets of newsprint
  • Cold glue
  • A medium brush
  • White acrylic base paint (purchased at craft stores)
  • A flat brush
  • A sponge for painting
  • Paint for final finishing

Making up the letters

  • Step 1 Make a cardboard mold to have a base and be able to cut the cardboard. The measure is 60 cm high x 40 cm wide and 15 cm thick or depth.
  • Step 2. With the cardboard molds, cut out the letters following their outline with the help of a sharp penknife or tip-top. Two sides must be cut to make a letter. You can use the edges of the boxes to make the inner parts of the thickness of the letters.
  • Step 3. Measure the sections of the thickness that you have not been able to make and make the bands that you are going to put to complete the depth of the letters. You can use softer cardboard, especially for letters with curves like S or U.
  • Step 4. Tape them firmly with the adhesive tape.
  • Step 5. When you have one side of a complete letter, with the depth bands (thickness) glued, place the other side as a cover and stick it with the adhesive tape, taking care to make it firm.
  • Step 6. Now, to close the letter with the outer thick band, stick it with the tape, which should also measure 15 cm. You now have a complete letter.
  • Step 7. Follow the same steps to make each of the letters of the names or romantic word you have chosen.

Painting process

  • Step 1. First the letters will be given a "cartapesta" process, which is something similar to the papier-mâché technique, but smoother. For this they need cold glue and sheets of newsprint.
  • Step 2. Using the brush, spread a layer of cold glue over the entire surface of the letter.
  • Step 3. Immediately afterwards, glue the sheets of newspaper together to cover the letter, but cut pieces of a medium size so that they do not wrinkle and adapt to the shape of the letter. Do not use scissors to cut, but use your hands so that the edges stick better to the surface.
  • Step 4. When it has dried (it takes a few minutes), apply two or three coats of acrylic paint, waiting for the first one to dry before applying the next one. Or if you want, you can apply a final coat of pearl acrylic paint on the front and sides to give it a shinier finish.
  • Step 5. Now take the sponge and, with a tweezers, make some holes to give texture to the color. Then, with a brush, paint the sponge with the color you have chosen and press it all over the surface of the letter, to give it the diluted effect. In this way you will complement the paint with the final finish.
  • Step 6. Finally, let it dry and that's it, you have your maxillons to decorate.

Whether the wedding rings are to be placed outdoors or indoors in a hall, XL letters will steal the show. They will add a personal and eye-catching touch to the wedding, whether they form a short love phrase or the names of the bride and groom. Best of all, they are very easy and inexpensive to make and you will enjoy your time together very much.
