The boom of Bollywood and the Indian film industry has brought us a little closer to their culture, and in series or TV shows we have seen some of our favorite characters getting married in Hindu ceremonies, full of colors, flowers and gold. But what does each detail mean? What is it that characterizes the Hindu marriage?

Some traditions during a hydú wedding

Samsara Henna

Mehndi: This is a big party that takes place the day before the wedding and is attended only by the bride's close friends and family.

Here the hands and feet of the bride are decorated with henna paste. The designs are very detailed and although they are mainly floral, there are also times when they hide messages such as the name of the groom, who will have to have all the patience in the world afterwards to find out where his name was hidden.

Traditions say that the darker the henna, the better luck the bride will have with her future mother-in-law, while others say that the color of the henna will also determine how strong the marriage will be or who she will love the most in the relationship.

Sangeet: Before the official ceremony and celebration, there is a party called Sangeet, which means "singing together", where each family sings a traditional song to welcome each other, while they dance and enjoy celebrating the marriage that is about to take place.

The arrival of the groom: Unlike Western marriages, in Hindu weddings the groom arrives with a large party at the ceremony site, along with a procession of his friends and family.

The groom's guests should join the mini parade instead of arriving directly at the wedding venue. Here the groom will be presented with a plate with a lighted lamp and garland, while the guests throw rice, enjoy the live music and dancing that will accompany them during the arrival parade.

What to wear to a Hindu wedding

Samsara Henna

It is common for guests to wear traditional Indian clothing, such as saris for the women and tunics and long-sleeved trousers for the men. In this case it is a way of honoring the bride and groom and their traditions and not necessarily falling into a misuse or approval of their culture.

Women should cover their shoulders, legs and, depending on how conservative the family is, their arms, while men should also wear trousers and long sleeves, and both should wear something to cover their heads during the ceremony.

Regarding the colors, the criteria and meanings are very different from the western ones. They should avoid white, as it is used for funerals, black, as it is bad luck, and red, which is the one used by the bride.

If you want to surprise frases de amor en hindi we give you a little hint.

Men and women declare their love with a slight grammatical variation. In most cases masculine verbs end in "a", while feminine verbs end in "ee". So to say I love you a man should say "...". main tumse pyar kartha hoon "while the woman " main tumse pyar karthee hoon ".

If you want to learn other beautiful Hindi words and their meaning you can use the same phrase and replace " pyar "(love) by " mohabbat " o " dholna "which correspond to other ways of saying love or referring to your partner.

Hindu weddings are colorful and highly planned festivals, full of celebration and tradition. While the very essence of a Hindu wedding ceremony is the physical, spiritual and emotional union of two people, it is also about the union of two families through celebration.
