The wedding of Queen Elizabeth II of England, then crown princess of the British crown, and Philip of Edinburgh, was a worldwide event. On 20 November 1947 they were married in front of 2,000 guests at Westminster Abbey, being the first royal wedding in history to be broadcast on BBC radio to 200 million people .

The wedding dress

The 21-year-old princess wore an ivory wedding dress in silk satin. Queen Elizabeth II's gown, with a sweetheart neckline and long sleeves, had a four-metre long fan-shaped train and was adorned with floral emblems embroidered in gold and silver thread and 10,000 pearls imported from the United States. The embroidery paid homage to the Commonwealth countries and fordesign, Sir Norman Hartnell was inspired by Boticelli's Spring.

She wore a diamond tiara And a bouquet of white orchids that also had a little incident beforehand, as she couldn't find where it was kept.

Philip, who had received the title of "His Royal Highness" only a day earlier from his father-in-law, King George VI, chose to wear his naval uniform.

Princess Elizabeth arrived at Westminster Abbey in a carriage with her father, King George VI, where the choir began singing "Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven" to leave the abbey as newlyweds with Mendelssohn's Wedding March in the background.

It is said that the wedding cake was almost three meters high and had four tiers; it was decorated with the coats of arms of the two families.

The wedding, held in a time of post-war austerity, meant that the newlyweds decided to spend their honeymoon in Hampshire, England and Balmoral, Scotland.
